The Silvercore Club includes individual excess third-party liability insurance up to a limit of $5,000,000 for members in good standing, arranged through HUB International and underwritten by Lloyd's Underwriters. It applies anywhere in Canada and the United States during recreational outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, lawful shooting, archery, camping and hiking. Membership is $59 CAD a year.
What is third-party liability insurance?
Third-party liability insurance pays when you are legally responsible for injuring someone else or damaging someone else's property. You are the first party. The person you hurt or whose property you damaged is the third party.
The HUB International program document for Silvercore members defines it this way: excess third-party liability "extends your liability coverage beyond the limits covered under your homeowners, unit owners or renters' insurance policy and is designed to cover you for physical injury or damage to someone else's property because of an accident you caused."
Why do shooters and hunters carry it?
Anyone who handles firearms, hunts, or spends time on someone else's land carries a real exposure. A ricochet that damages a vehicle, a fall caused by your gear at a range, or a fire at a camp you set up can all lead to a claim against you personally. A homeowner's or renter's policy has its own limit, and some people have no personal liability cover at all.
HUB's program document also notes that "providing neighbouring recreational clubs with a copy of your Silvercore membership insurance may save you from additional daily insurance fees for the use of the visiting gun club or range."
What does the Silvercore Club insurance cover?
The wording below comes from HUB International's program document for Silvercore members and the current certificate of liability insurance.
- Limit: individual third-party liability coverage "up to a limit of $5,000,000" for members in good standing.
- Insurer: Lloyd's Underwriters, policy GC060153, placed through HUB International Canada West ULC.
- Policy period on the current certificate: 31 December 2025 to 31 December 2026.
- Activities: "Recreational outdoor activities may include but are not limited to hunting, fishing, lawful shooting, archery, camping, hiking as well as ownership of watercraft up to 26 feet in length with motors not more than 100 HP but only while actively involved in Hunting or Angling activities."
- Where it applies: "anywhere in Canada and the United States of America (including its territories and possessions)."
- When it becomes primary: "Excess Third-Party Liability will become the primary policy where no other personal insurance applies."
- Fraser Valley hunting: the program document states the cover "meets the $1,000,000.00 Public Liability and Property Damage insurance requirement for hunting in the Fraser Valley Special Licence Hunting Area (FVSLHA) (situated in MUs 2-4, 2-8)." Section 27 of the BC Hunting Licensing Regulation (B.C. Reg. 8/99) sets that requirement: public liability and property damage insurance of $1,000,000 or more to hunt in the Fraser Valley special hunting area.
The certificate is valid only when presented with a current affiliated club membership card.
What does it not cover?
The program document states that coverage is not provided for first-party bodily injury or property damage to yourself or your property. It lists these examples of losses that are not covered:
- your business activities
- bodily injury for any intentional or criminal act or failure to act
- bodily injury to yourself
- damage to property owned, leased or rented by you
For anything outside these documents, including deductibles that apply to a member's claim, call HUB International at 1-250-753-4169. The policy wording governs, and the certificate states that it does not amend or extend the cover in the policy.
What else comes with the membership?
The Silvercore Club was the first club in Canada (not a range) approved by the RCMP as meeting ATT issuance requirements, and it is accepted in all provinces and territories across Canada. Anyone can join, with or without a PAL, from anywhere in Canada or internationally. Members also get regulatory updates by email, the members-only Outpost podcast and partner discounts.
For me, the insurance is the part people underrate. I would rather have cover I never use than find out after an accident that my homeowner's policy stops short.
Join the Silvercore Club and keep your membership card with your hunting licence and PAL.
